During World War II, the M18 tank destroyer developed by the US Army, known as the Hellcat, was designed to counteract powerful German tanks such as Tigers and Panthers. Equipped with a powerful 76 mm tank cannon, the open tower of the Hellcat was focused on search power. To secure the space in the turret, the main loading part of the gun was arranged with a 45-degree rotation around the barrel.
Moreover, the compact body of the Hellcat was tracked for weight reduction, and it was the first US tank to feature an automatic transmission and torsion bar suspension. Powered by a star-shaped 9-cylinder petrol engine mounted on the rear of the body, the Hellcat demonstrated a top speed of more than 80 km/h, making it the fastest tracked vehicle in World War II.
Production of the Hellcat began in July 1943, and the vehicle made its first appearance on the Italian front in 1944. Subsequently, it was sent to Northwest Europe and the Pacific Front, where it defeated German tanks one by one through hit-and-away tactics, leveraging its high-speed performance and firepower. As the spearhead of the anti-tank battle, the Hellcat contributed to the victory of the US Army.
